Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Nicholas Creak. I have been a member of Itchenor Sailing Club for many years, sailing alongside my elder brother Michael, sisters Suzie and Becky and of course Mum and Dad, Christopher and Annie. After graduating from Portsmouth University having studied Business Studies I planned and embarked upon what for me was a challenge of a lifetime. Between 2nd October and 17th December 2003 I participated on a Raleigh International Expedition to Costa Rica and Nicaragua.In order to be able to take part, my first challenge was to raise £3,300 through sponsorship. On Friday 20th June as planned I sailed my laser non-stop around the Isle of Wight, accompanied by Adam Brushett and Jon Emmett. We were very lucky to choose a day with perfect weather, leaving Cowes at 06:10 with a 12-knot westerly wind and the tide under us. We reached our first landmark the Needles by 08:00. There followed a long run down the South of the island passing St. Catherine's, our half way point at about 11:00. From Bembridge we had to tack, but being in lasers were able to hug the shore to keep out of the tide. We passed the finish at Cowes at 15:45 giving us a rounding time of 9:35mins. After putting the boats away it was aboard 'SEN' for a well-deserved beer, dinner and a very sound nights sleep.
On Expedition I participated on 3 projects. Each project lasted for 3 weeks and consisted of the themes: Community, Environmental and Adventure. The Expedition was run from Base Camp where training and change overs took place at CATIE (An International Research and Higher Education Centre for Tropical Agriculture) in Turrialba, 70km east of San José Costa Rica.
